A 49 Year Old Tradition

The tenth edition of the Atlanta $10,000 Car Show took over the Atlanta Dragway this past weekend.  Rain pushed the festivities back a day, with the car show taking place on Sunday instead of Saturday. The first Atlanta $10,000 car show was held at the Atlanta Speed Shop Dragway in 1964.  Nearly five decades later, the passion and support for the event remains.

The Dixie Twister Team of Randall Davis, Rocky Platt, and David Dobbs participated in the show for the second straight year.  Photographer Barrie Collins was present to capture the magic on behalf of the Dixie Twister Team.

The Dixie Twister Heats Up The Night

Randall Davis hit a scintillating top speed of 158.6 miles per hour in his Friday night run at the Atlanta Dragway to kick off the Atlanta $10,000 Nostalgia Drags & Car Show.  The Dixie Twister funny car scorched down the racetrack on a cool October night.

Drag Racing Under the Lights

One of the many entertaining occurrences under the lights at Atlanta $10,000 was the track being available to civilian vehicles.  While I resisted the urge to dare my colleague to attempt a burnout in my Honda Odyssey, the temptation was certainly there.

The Legacy Lives On

The Atlanta $10,000 Car Show spans multiple generations of drag racing enthusiasts.  Georgia Racing Hall of Fame member Houston Platt competed at the Atlanta $10,000 over 40 years ago. Randall Davis was by his side working as his crew chief.

At the renewed Atlanta $10,000 in 2013, Rocky Platt walked alongside Randall as he prepared to make his run down the track in the restored Dixie Twister.  Nostalgia drag racing is much more than a sport; it is a tie that binds family and friends together.

Let’s Get Together and Make Some Noise!

A favorite slogan of Atlanta $10,000 is “Let’s Get Together and Make Some Noise!”  Atlanta Dragway had a great turnout of roaring engines and vintage cars to accomplish that.  I can still smell the exhaust fumes, and the revving of engines has challenged my ability to hear.

The Dixie Twister Team would like to thank the Atlanta Dragway, the family of Julius Hughes, along with everyone who endeavored to support the 2013 iteration of Atlanta $10,000.
